About Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution consists of 19 museums, the National Zoo, nine research facilities, travelling exhibitions, and more than 150 affiliated museums, making it the world’s largest museum and research complex. The Smithsonian Institution was founded in 1846 by an Act of Congress, signed by US President James K. Polk, with the mission to create an establishment for “the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” The scope of the millions of artifacts in the Smithsonian collections is astounding, including everything from Dorothy’s ruby slippers to the Lunar Orbiter. For more information about the Institution, visit the official site.
